During this winter blast my husband and I managed to make it to a few family holiday celebrations for appetizers, a brunch, and several sweet treats. Somehow I managed to keep my plates small and my stomach not feeling as bloated. However, the mix of dairy make the tummy rumble a few times but it was worth it.
Those with certain food sensitivities understand my dilemma and we have to ask if the stomach ache is worth it. I said “yes” to a few things that are always a gamble and I did pay for it but the holidays are only once a year.
Good thing the unwrapping of presents and catching up with family members occupied most of time. This year, the gatherings are smaller but no matter how much I want to stay in my pajamas and watch Hallmark movies I know that time goes by too quickly. I don’t want to think about what will happen my I no longer have holidays with my parents.
My husband and I already agreed we need to find some older people to hang out with as cousins and family members have children of their own and begin their own holiday celebrations. Good thing I have a few friends that open their homes for those who may not have anywhere to go. Maybe that’s something we’ll have to do when old traditions change.
So, no matter where you are, I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. May you find your or make your own traditions if you’re in need of them. For those heading out to family celebrations, remember it’s about making new memories even if they don’t happen the way we expect. These times are for the relative that repeats the same stories, the kids who are too eager to open presents, and who made the best dish of the night.
When someone tests your patience, remember you can turn it around and think about giving someone else a good memory as a present for next year. Sometimes you need to be the one who makes the holiday event the good memory.
