I’m in my seat for my 5 minutes a day and it’s my husband’s birthday (well yesterday). He decided to take a different day off but he’s been busy at his corporate job and building his own 3D printing job. Luckily, my muses are here to help him with a list of accessories to go with my miniatures. I’ve had him try some designs that he didn’t know were trending and we sold them all at our show last Saturday.
Yes, he’s more than lucky to have me. He shakes his head when I put on my crown with the TikTok crowd, and he’s used to my crazy ideas. I guess I should keep him around. I like to think that I balance out his reserved nature. I mean, every wife takes their husband to the mechanic first thing on their birthday morning. Right?
Our morning drive together was a quick stop to drop off the car to get checked out and pick a loaner that creeks and squeaks more than the car I dropped off. We turned and laughed at each other as we listened to the gears moan because we didn’t know if we traded one problem for another but it was the only loaner available.
His birthday morning continued with an exciting trip through the McDonald’s drive thru for breakfast before our new tin can turned back onto the road toward his work. I sang him a birthday song as we stopped at an intersection and looked at the new shirt I got him for his birthday. The feather pattern wasn’t too crazy because he wore it to work. His presents always include pieces of clothing because he never shops for himself and I have to watch for holes in his socks because we doesn’t notice.
I looked over at him and wondered how we managed to stay together for this many years. There’s been times when if felt like the world wanted to tear us apart. There’s been times when he’s spoiled me despite my catty behavior. But as my eyes went over his puffy hair that needs to be trimmed I couldn’t picture anyone else beside me. No other book cover characters flashed through my mind. Just this funny guy who’s still here. The only thing I could think next is that his crazy balances out my crazy, and we just work that way.
When I leaned over to wish him happy birthday and give him a kiss before he opened the car door, I wished he was coming back home with me for my day off. I thought he would take off today too. I guess our time together will wait for this weekend. We booked dinner out to celebrate both our birthdays.
After I dropped him off, I immediately started to plan the places I was going to shop at without him knowing. I did manage to send him some birthday GIFs throughout the day. In fact, I might squeeze in a nap before he gets home. He’ll never know that his birthday helped me get a daily dose of writing in.
I hope you’re doing well out there. When you don’t know where to begin, stop yourself from feeling overwhelmed. Just journal about your day for 5-10 minutes. The same technique as humor writer, David Sedaris.
