Street Fair Celebrating

Friday is finally here and I’m getting ready for a busy weekend. It’s street fair time for The Art Shoppe in Minneapolis that carries the artwork and books of many local artists. My husband and I will be under a tent as the community celebrates. I can already hear the music and smell the wide variety of foods from all over the world.

The shop is part of an effort to support the diverse community and help start-ups in one marketplace. All the shops and food vendors in the Midtown Global Market play are family owned and community owned. It’s also one way to help those who want to try to start a business but don’t have a lot of capital.

The feel of the small market is different from a shopping mall. The people there hold on a little tighter to the dream of making a living from things that connect them to their culture. Our shop gives artists of color the opportunity to learn how to sell and market their items. They are also connected to the art community as a whole.

I also need to mention that writers gather early on Saturday mornings for writing prompts. Someone reads a word or phrase and then calls out the number of minutes you have to write. When the time ends a microphone is passed around and those who are brave enough to read out loud share. Having attended some of the meet-up times, I had a good time meeting other writers. I also laughed a few times with others, not because the work was bad, but because many worked in their humor into 5 minutes.

I can only hope that the future of this market continues and gets more support as the years go on because they give people who wouldn’t normally get the chance to express their ideas, dreams, and cultures. There’s a reason the building was placed in a low income area.

So if you get the chance to make come see us, then stop by and support a local neighborhood rich in culture and talent. I’m sure you’ll hear about the events of this weekend in my futures posts.

My posts are Monday through Friday.

I created my website and social media to reach out to other writers because the process can be lonely. I wanted to reach out to readers, writers, and those with a dream of finishing “that” novel. I share the advice of other writers and the tools I use to create my stories.
