Happy Valentine’s Day! Today is a day made for all romance writers! They’re the ones who could fill every corner of a Hallmark card with every kind of romance. Some love the dark and dangerous, whiles others love the sappy. We don’t need a steamy shower to write love scenes. Yes, smoke billows out of our fingers and fog floats into the room because we’re that good at it. Writers are full of drama. And this is what some of us picture when we sit down to write.
Thinking about what some writers have done when they’re getting ready to sit down, I have to ask my readers – what do you do? Some of my prompts encouraged writers to dress up as their character before they sat down. Do you picture yourself on stage receiving your award? I ask because I want to know what some of my fellow writer’s think about. I guess I want to know all those things that don’t go into the book.
My methods have me turn on the different kinds of music to get me into the mood, or to listen to what my characters would in different scenes. I call this typing in rhythm. The beats sound like words. Sometimes, I put on character clothes before I sit down, or I play lines from my favorite movies. Don’t tell my husband but sometimes I’ve made the dinners in my books just so that I can see the colors and smell the smells. You can guess what other things I’ve tried on him to see if they work.
What am I getting at today? You’re a writer – don’t wait for romance to find you. Surround yourself with red roses today, and use it for writing. Get your favorite meal. Treat yourself to a romantic dinner if you don’t have someone to go with you. Let the magic fog roll in with or without someone. Sip that wine while you write today. Put those Hallmark cards to shame.
Did you follow one of my previous prompts and send someone love notes? Or did you leave them for yourself. Give it a try today. Write some love letters and love notes, then leave them around for you to find later. Write to the person you’ve never been able to approach tonight. Tell your significant other why you love them in a letter. Just write.
