After spending the weekend with my parents out in the country, it’s been hard to get back into work mode again. Being able to hear the birds chirp without fire trucks going by, or watch a hungry raccoon trying to raid my parent’s bird feeder brought a sense of tranquility that I can’t get in the city.
The nearby bridge would rattle once in a while with milk trucks moving to and from the creamery but I wasn’t ready to go back. I understood why people try to escape and go off grid. At the same time, I would miss the close convenience of coffee shops, stores, and activities. I don’t want to drive half an hour during the winter to get groceries. Would Amazon find me as fast? I get my art supplies and other items from online stores regularly.
Maybe my version of migrating is not to a warmer climate during the winter but a move out to a cabin during the summer. The dream of being able to run things from home for myself and my husband continues. I’ve been talking numbers with my husband to see how much money needs to be saved for the transition time.
The fact that I’ve actually started to take steps to change my lifestyle is a plus. In the past, I would think about it but never commit to it completely. Meaning, I would always keep my writing and art on the side even if I was putting in full time hours. My brain never made the shift where I put what I love doing first. I always had to have the “day job” for a security net.
Tire of seeing other people achieve their dream, or doing what I wanted to do I decided to make the shift for real this year and stop being afraid. I don’t want to have regrets later in life. Knowing people who received life changing news lately about their health, seeing myself, and parents age finally flipped the switch.
I’ll continue blogging about my journey to help document all the challenges, triumphs, and stories. Wish me luck as I make the switch over the summer.
My summer mode posts will continue a few times a week! Until the next post!
