This week I’m trying work through a recommended new book called, The War of Art, by Steven Pressfield. The reason I hit download in my Audible queue was because an entrepreneur that I follow, Abdi Dhaal, said that he read this book to help him get through that feeling of “resistance” that we all feel when we want to accomplish a goal.
I’m not too fond of the chapter changing music but Steven goes through what every person, and fellow writer deals with on a daily basis. We all know what we need to do to write that novel or accomplish our dream but we often get stopped. His book is about recognizing the feeling, acknowledging, and working through it like a professional.
All of us writers can relate when one of us says that our house is never cleaner, and chores around our house never get done faster than when we say we’re going to finish that novel. The reality of this situation is very real. What is this thing that stops us, distracts us, and makes us do everything else except write?
Steven calls this resistance. His chapters go into his own story and how he and others get past the feeling that stops us short. Do I agree with everything? I don’t know yet but much of what he explains sounds familiar and very true to what’s stopped me from accomplishing what I know is reason for being here.
I’m in a better place than where I was by doing some of what he mentions without reading his book but I wished I met those people like him to help guide me earlier in my life so I was further along than now. I’m still headed in the write direction but getting past that feeling that stops me is still something I work through every day. The difference is I’m less likely to stop thanks to people like Steven sharing what got them through any blocks in their life.
You can join me by going through this new book, or find your own but I hope you keep going through that feeling that turns us all sluggish. Keep the inner battle going
