Colors of Character

Ideas are floating in my head and I’m trying to find an anchor for one of them to get a few projects completed in the next few weeks. I have the job of creating a simple logo but it’s not so simple. Taking a design and stripping it down to it’s core element has never been easy because I tend to go for complicated. I also have another outdoor event that I paid to be in and now I actually have to make some new pieces for it.

In order to develop my ideas I did a few quick, ugly sketches and then resorted to my go-to, writing. Writing is like a thinking out loud process and if you were to see my mind it would look like a big ball of knotted yarn before a shape starts to take place. My mind map would be a ton of thoughts that don’t look connected until I can link them all together with a plan.

My art is like writing. I have a ton of ideas and then I look at the pile and can feel overwhelmed by the mess I created. But like my prompts I just have to pick one idea and get started. Taking the first step is always the hardest part and then the steps that follow, even if I falter follow one foot in front of the other. I just need to keep going.

The biggest struggle right now is one main theme. Summertime gives me thoughts of tropical plants, bright colors, and thoughts of sizzling. Then, my marketing brain is already thinking of fall those thoughts are filled with cool colors. So I think I do what I always do when I have two muses calling. Maybe it’s not about the theme but using two different color palettes, one for day and one for night. A warm and cool using the same shapes and textures.

Like a book character shapes or objects have depth and there’s more than one side to them. Not a split personality but a shift in mood. The more I write this out the more convincing it sounds to my brain and the prompt has worked again. I’ll update you on my progress as ideas develop, and you’ll just have to read about it until I’m done with this phase. Don’t worry, my regular prompts will begin again after my next event.

My posts are Monday through Friday.

I’m an author in Minnesota who started out writing and illustrating Children’s books. I’ve published poetry and adult Romance Novels. I created my website and social media to reach out to other writers because the process can be lonely. I wanted to reach out to readers, writers, and those with a dream of finishing “that” novel. I share the advice of other writers and the tools I use to create my stories.
