Show day is this Saturday and I’m not in a panic. No. Not me. I’m only running back and forth between the printer, the clay oven, and my tables in a frenzy to get everything ready. Yes, there’s always this feeling right before a show because all of the things you forgot to think about wake you up in the middle of the night.
My brain decides to remind me at the most inconvenient time that I forgot my table price tags, or to package something important – like change for transactions. You’ve seen those reality shows of people in competitions and the same thing is going on right before a book or art event. There’s a little chaos going on behind the scenes as you over-prepare because you don’t want to forget something.
I always get to shows with things in my totes that I don’t use but insisted that I bring. I’ve learned it’s better to bring that forget it. Speaking of all the behind the scenes, I have to go hunting for where I packed my books. Good thing I’ve spent time packing and repacking because I don’t have as many to dig through.
The important question is how many totes can I Tetris into my car? I actually lay awake at night thinking about how I can strategically fit one more box in the trunk or back seat. I only hope they let us drive to our vendor spot because I don’t want to lug everything I bring, one at a time.
Don’t worry, I’ll only unpack and repack a few more times to see what I can shove in the corner of a tote. Then, I’ll wake up thinking of something else I forgot. The thing to remember is that all this effort is worth it. Putting your work out there isn’t something to be afraid of, it’s a better than good feeling because you did it.
Get your work out there. Organize your writing drawer and then see how you can find an event of your own to get your writing heard out loud. Post on a blog, a magazine, a local paper. I started out by guest writing for a local paper, and publishing my poetry in the same paper to get started.
My posts are Monday through Friday.
