Are you an aspiring writing who still has a day job? Well, you’re not alone. There are a lot of self published and contracted writers who have another job to support their lifestyles. Online platforms are making more of dreams come true but it’s still only a small percent of us. Besides, some of us may not write novels for a living. We might write magazine articles, or in regular publications. A writer is still a writer.
I’m telling my audience to keep an open mind when it comes to being a published author. Some published authors have graphic novels, comics, picture books, or my favorite this year – journals that help other writers. Let’s change the way we think about the word “job”. Not having to pay for your own private insurance is a plus. I’ve always done more than one thing for years.
You want to know the best part about having more than one kind of job or hobby? You have material to work with. You don’t have to imagine what it’s like to be a writing coach, working at an office, or working at a local coffee shop. People watching on the job is a way to think about every day interactions. Write about the man in the red scarf during the holidays that walked into your coffee shop.
Writing about an office romance? You don’t have to stretch your imagination as far if you work in one. Just remember to change names and read your non-disclosures. Ideas are all around us. Still having trouble with your novel this month? Start out your chapter with a prompt. Sometimes it just takes a little nudge to get your pen moving again.
I hope everyone can ramp up their word count over the weekend. I have work to do. Well, just two novels for other people and my own. When it comes to editing, expect 3 or 4 rounds in addition to what you plan. No biggie. Stay tuned for more updates next week.
