The sun started setting and like any normal person I was taking photos with my new phone of a Minion Frankenstein and Bride. Minion mummies and tiny pumpkins were stars of the lighting set. My mind started to race with fantastical creatures and fairy tales. Getting into the mood I turned on a cook show of all things Halloween and thought I would share.
I started to watch “The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell” on Netflix after my introduction to The Night Before Halloween Cookbook. Why not find tasty treat recipes for my haunted house made out of recycled Amazon boxes, flicker candelabras, and halloween miniatures under domes?
You know where I’m going with this? Well, instead of transporting yourself into a fantasy world only through your imagination, why not decorate or build your own sets to get into the mood. I’ve seen other story tellers who create fantastical sets in their studios to tell a non-verbal story. They want to trill the mind and our eyes.
Written words should do the same. Get into your fantasy world this year and see if it makes a difference in your writing. I do caution against anything that would harm you, a pet, or anyone else. Sit surrounded by fantastical flower creations you make. Put your fingers through fake spiderwebs to get the feeling under your fingertips.
Home Makeovers can include beastly creatures, a little shop of horrors (You might not get visitors if you’re too gruesome), or a land of fairy tales. This type of activity is showing up more and more on social media. Can’t get the media attention for your books? Give them a visual wow instead and include your links.
I’ll share my results from Preptober next month. My posts are Monday through Friday.
