Driving down the city streets of Minnesota feels like I’m in a miniature world, like the ones I create out of clay. Mountains of snow taller than large trucks are pushed into parking lot corners. The last snowfall make the snow banks taller than adults, and plows pushed piles onto lawns and sidewalks. The small walk home or from bus stops is dangerous because you have to walk in the streets until everyone can dig out a pathway.
Instead of looking for deer or daylight squirrels ready to jump out, I look for pedestrians that feel the need to dart out in front of cars in all black. Someone should warm people who like walking in the winter or who have to take public transportation to wear any other color other than black. Nights are darker and longer in the winter and driving can be slippery. So if you need to walk at night, please wear brighter color clothing. Humans get to choose what they wear unlike our furry friends.
As I picked up my husband and we made our way to drop off an Etsy order of one of my handmade clay pieces, I started to think about what it would be like to live in a real snow globe. A kind of dome with air pollution and temperature control. Only the crazy weather happens outside my bubble. No shoveling, an ambient temperature, and I can go outside for a short time if I want to experience life up north but it’s become a choice.
I wonder what all of my neighbors would do and how different things would look as you drove down the street. Maybe all these crazy weather events propelled my thoughts of a small world that could be adjusted with an Alexa command. How this affect rules of society or laws?
There would be benefits for people who live in polluted cities because each bubble to filter out toxins in the air, maybe harmful viruses could be scrubbed out. Would this weaken our immune system over time?
These are all the questions and thoughts of a writer. This may turn into a story later. My question is what kind of future city would you create? I’ll leave you with this thought as we move into the weekend. Happy writing!
