Last Friday, I had a skip day because I was shivering under the covers. My body always disagrees with the changing of the seasons and I usually end up with something. Frankly, I wish it would get over this kind of change but it might just be the way I’m built. Vitamins, teas, and other immune boosting things don’t seem to help this year.
At least I made up for my missed post by one on Saturday. Usually, I give myself the weekend off like any other job when it comes to writing but when there’s a burst I go with it. Being flexible and trying to maintain some form of discipline is one way I’ve been able to publish anything.
You know what also helps, being able to do a celebration dance when you sell one of your books. This weekend I sold one of my children’s books to a mother with a ballerina daughter, adopted from China. I shared that I decided to illustrate and write my own books with characters that looked more like me because I didn’t see books that on the shelf. All the book characters had blond hair and blue eyes, so I decided to write and illustrate my own when I grew up.
No matter what kind of writing you do, there’s a part of us in every book. Remember to celebrate all that you are and all that you do. If you’ve always felt like an outsider, then you might be a better writer because you can relate to characters that people want to read about. No one wants to read about someone bland that’s cookie cutter, unless their life starts to fall apart or they learn about something that changes who they are.
Another point of view is this – no matter who you are someone reads your books because of the beauty of your words. Your words can overcome differences and that is power at your fingertips.
