The count day to my Featured Artist spot is only 3 days away and I finished a few more deadlines this weekend. I have to say that I feel comfort in returning to my keyboard to write because the challenges I set for myself for creating new pieces drained all my energy. Returning to something familiar after my adventure with acrylic paint this weekend is comforting.
I had to smile because I had this same feeling when I started to write every day again after neglecting my pen for a few years. I felt like I was facing a mountain and I didn’t know where to begin again. But because I set the motion of practicing with prompts regularly, the process is familiar and my brain doesn’t go into meltdown mode. My body also knows that this feeling is a good thing because it means that I’m learned by challenging myself.
This leads to the point of today’s blog. Changing mediums, or genres can have the same effect on your writing. Experiencing growth may stretch the limits of your brain but new skills can be gained. Reaching your own measurement of success for improving your writing may take a change in style. This is like changing lenses in photography. Doing something new can give you a different perspective. Your words might string together in a new way.
As writers and artists, we need to push the boundaries of our work. We need to challenge what’s acceptable according to the rules of grammar. We see this all the time with character being written that weren’t considered main stream or acceptable in certain societies. What we do has power to speak for those may be forced to the background. We can give voice to what’s right, not what’s popular. Having purpose in your craft can elevate us and those around us to a new depth.
Challenge yourself this week. Write bravely. Wield your craft.
