The autumn leaves are falling up north and I’ve been a ghost to my own pages. Preptober is here and I’m not going for a month long frenzy this year. I guess I’m still trying to find the right words to lay out in black and white. Instead of typing away into the night, I’ve been filling my world with art and the words of other writers.
Maybe this year is a rest period and a time to fill my literary hunger with good words. Reading, listening to more audio books, and watching movies about writers have been my binges. At the start of September I returned to old television series with memorable characters and sentences I envied. Sometimes that feeling, like a warm stomach after a good meal, is hard to find. Good words, like memorable moments don’t come that often. Instead of waiting for something inspiring, I return to my lists and prompts.
Words are comfort and I don’t know about you, but I often don’t find them going about daily life. How often do we hear kind words from strangers, or witness warmth between people in public? I guess that’s why I’m working on building up my own library of things that bring a smile to my lips and provide food for the soul.
When a day goes wrong, we can always turn the pages until we feel better. So, that’s what the last months of this year bring. My own kind of food for comfort. I don’t think my next book will come until I’ve had my next great feast. I can’t write a good book without good words to fill it.
I wish the best words to all my fellow writers this fall! May our minds be filled with the words of a thousand authors.
