Just Write!

Yesterday, everyone I met looked like they had as much sleep as I did. There was recognition of the bags under our eyes and we didn’t need to say anything out loud. The month of March has worn us all out.

Maybe everyone else was busy running around, or celebrated too many days of St. Patrick’s Day but I can’t wait until this week is over. My fingers were moving last night but my eyes were closing at the same time.

I heard the voice inside my head tell myself, “Just write one blog post. Do something.” So, I sat my but down and got moving. That learned discipline took me 2 years but it worked. My fingers are like the ticking of a clock every day and the tired push gave me energy to empty out a few thoughts instead of having them trapped in my head.

Having a writing hang-over is the worst kind of feeling. What do I mean? The feeling when your trying to go to sleep but the guilt bubbles up and you know you should get something done but you don’t. Eventually, you fall asleep but it’s there the whole time haunting you. Then, you wake up in the morning feeling worse because you didn’t write anything.

Sometimes those ideas you had for your book are gone and can’t be recalled. The “I’ll remember in the morning” didn’t work. Or the guilt of what you couldn’t have done but didn’t finish follows you around all day like a bad shadow.

Thoughts you need to get out can keep you awake at night too. Writing might be good for your health because emptying everything out before you go to bed lets your mind rest when you should be sleeping.

The point is that you need to take action today. You had a few days of looking up resources and thinking about the direction you want to go. Now, it’s time to take one tiny step forward. Write for 5-10 minutes on one of your chapters. Don’t let any excuse get in the way and let yourself sleep at night. I don’t want to catch you in public with bags under your eyes too! Just write.

We’ll keep going tomorrow! My posts are Monday to Friday!

I’m an author in Minnesota who started out writing and illustrating Children’s books. I’ve published poetry and adult Romance Novels. I created my website and social media to reach out to other writers because the process can be lonely. I wanted to reach out to readers, writers, and those with a dream of finishing “that” novel. I share the advice of other writers and the tools I use to create my stories.
