This week I’m rowing between two countries and I just rowed my writing boat back to France. My ears are surrounded by a new television series about a top real estate family in Paris. L’Agence has me hooked. I don’t know if seeing all the luxurious places for sale are a good thing because my dreams is to open my Paris apartment window with my morning croissant and hot chocolate with my typewriter.
The stationary stores and quaint book shops would become another home as I strolled down the winding alleys and away from the traffic of the noisy streets. What a better to read and write books, like a cat perched in a favorite nook.
Some cities just hold the hearts of writers around the world. I’ve read some articles that asked if Paris still held it’s magic and every time I see those blue covered roofs and narrow buildings I still smile like it’s the first time I’m seeing the city of lights. The only problem is that I’m a little too tied to things here in Minnesota to move right now. I’m not one of those who can just get up and move to a new country without a place to live and a back up nest egg.
I guess I’ll just have to work harder on selling more books and art pieces. Hopefully, I can stay patient enough. The past few years are one the reasons I’m more cautious. I want to take the leap but I like having a net underneath. If you’ve been brave enough to leap to a new city or country, let me know.
While I dream of roaming around the streets of Paris and indulging my taste buds, I’ll surround my ears with the sights and sounds of the language. One of the reasons I’m watching this series is because I wanted to hear the French language with all of it’s phrases that aren’t interpreted exactly in the subtitles. Their way of counting past 60 still doesn’t make sense to me but I can’t say anything because English has lots of rules that don’t make sense.
Trying to get into the head of a character that thinks in a different language and grew up in a different culture isn’t an easy feat. I’m trying to think like a Parisian but this is going to take some time. I guess I’ll have to finish the rest of the episodes of L’Agence.
I can’t end today’s blog without a prompt. Pretend you’re in the city of your dreams. Write for 5-10 minutes.
My posts are Monday through Friday.
