Changing plans over the weekend means that it’s time to get back to the most important part of being an author, and that’s sitting my butt down and writing this week. My goal this week is to add to my page count for one of my fantasy novels. In previous weeks, I took a deeper dive in the personalities of my characters and reworked the details of my initial setting to write a better story.
Details make the difference for your readers and I skimmed over the surface too many times. I knew something was missing and dug into my resources for advice. I spent days letting words tumble onto the page of sights, sounds, thoughts, and scenes for weeks. The world I was rebuilding started to come into focus and I had a flash of color that popped the entrance of my characters into this new world. The reason for their quest into this new world grew stronger and I felt something change.
The words on my page had an “ah-ha” moment and the emotional connection that was missing emerged. Let’s just say that entering into a world with purgatory orange skies that fall into complete darkness with no moonlight made a bigger impression that my sunny skied entrance. Imagine a world that never sees the sun rise into blue skies or slowly fall into the horizon. A constant world of dark shadows and plants are slowly dying from nature’s punishment when someone turns off the lightbulb in the closet and not even the light from under the door appears.
The creatures that live in the purgatory might think a curse fell upon their world. What if someone blamed outsiders for this curse and humans were forbidden throughout the kingdoms? What would happen if you were thrust into this world without a choice? Enter though the gate or die.
This entrance into my fantasy world was improved after following the exercises that I share each week. What stories are you working on? Let me know if the comments. I have to return to my writing process.
Follow as I post on my progress throughout the month and share the experience.
