Today, I felt like I was going a school field trip as I jumped in the car. A phone call the other day let me know that a book I was waiting for by Kim Jiyun, had finally arrived. During the holidays I was craving a good story, a neighborhood story that gives inspiration and hope.
My read for this month is Yeonnam-Dong’s Smiley Laundromat. This story is about how a diary in one laundromat inspired others in the neighborhood to listen, talk, and help each other. We could all use a lift going into the a new year.
Let me say that my mood was lifted when I walked into the local Barnes & Noble close to home. Something about seeing a bookstore filled with all kinds of stories makes me happy. The only problem was walking out of there with just one book.
Other people must have had the same idea because the chairs near the coffee bar were fuller than last time. Some people were hiding, some worked on school work, others read, and I’m sure one or two were working on their own writing.
Maybe I find joy in book stores because their filled with thousands of ideas, dreams, and imagination. Writing a book is like leaving a piece of your soul pressed onto the pages. Something of ourselves will live on and have a voice.
Reading a good story is also like a random act of kindness to yourself because it can change your mood. That’s why I was looking to start off 2025 with a good year for a good start. So, if you’re feeling down or sluggish take a trip to the local book store. Sit down and read for a while.
It’s okay to escape from the world for a few minutes. Not to mention, that it also keeps our book stores alive.
For a while, I was worried that book stores were dying. While I do listen to audio books, I never want the smell of paper, ink, and the sound of turning pages to go extinct. I don’t want that light bulb in that part of my brain that feels paper to go dormant.
If you’re looking for a new read, then you might want to read the same book with me. I’ve been waiting for it’s release in the US since last year. Let me know what you think of the book if you do! I’m off to read some more!
