Over the last few weeks I’ve travelled the world through YouTube and I’m still on the hunt for the perfect corner tucked away in the city of millions. I would like one quiet spot with a table, drinks at the counter, yummy pastries, and a decibel level that’s barely a whisper. People come and go but their voices don’t bellow over the whistle of the espresso machine.
Is it too much to ask for cozy, comfortable, and an escape from all the noise. I want to sit with my notepad, drawing pencils, or travel paints to be left in my bubble without having to cut myself out completely from public places. A little noise wouldn’t be bad but I don’t want conversations to spill over that I can’t focus on my art or a good book.
Having been to different places around the Twin Cities, I don’t know how some authors managed to sit in cafes for hours and concentrate. I find them too noisy and never the tranquil place of retreat that I imagine. In my mind, I would like to be transported into a fantasy land undisturbed by a neighbor or having to put on headphones. I’ve seen many teens wearing them just for noise reduction and I think I might join them on days when I don’t want to be bothered.
Ears can experience sensory overload too. Mine seem extra sensitive and I regularly practice filling them with sights, sounds, and conversation that give me hope in the world instead of what we usually get unfiltered in the world. Sometimes, optimism needs to be created.
Now that I own more of my own time, I’m going to indulge in the kind of world I would write for myself. I am the main character. Repeat this with me, you are the main character. What kind of life do you want on the pages?
I’ll let you think about that question. I’m off to search for places in Minnesota with temporary bubbles. Maybe I need to start a new trend of fantasy themed cafes.
