I know a few weeks have passed since my last post but my world has been filled with life size cats, characters from The Never Ending Story, and very tall Chewbacca’s. I haven’t had that much time at the keyboard because my husband and I were getting ready for our very first Con of the year at the beginning of November.
Over the past month my fingers have been busy sculpting miniatures and thinking up new creations. Imagine creating a fantasy world but in miniature. When I say mini, I mean sculpting pieces that are about an inch tall and wide because I can’t do anything normal. Normal size is boring. It either has to be extremely big or extremely small. Art shouldn’t be ordinary.
When set-up day at Twin Cities Con finally arrived at the Minneapolis Convention Center, we entered into a completely different world for three days and never lacked for entertainment with all the cosplayers who attended. I loved every minute of being surrounded by other people who bring fiction into reality. Character after character, some with furry tails passed by and my eyes never lacked imagination.
As an author, being able to see living book characters reminds you of the reason you write. Your words can spark the imagination of thousands of people all over the world. The kind of feeling that leaves you smiling instead of heartbroken. Unless, it’s a good book cry. I don’t know about you but escaping from the “real” world is a necessity today.
At one point aisles were filled with so many people in Cosplay my eyes glazed over again and I tried not to feel overwhelmed. Miniatures flew off our shelves faster than I could make them. No time to think, just hit buttons. I felt like I was at the book signing table again. I was lacking sleep just like a typical event week but I was happy.
The excitement of selling what you spent hours creating made my chest puff just a little bit. I also had fun being able to let our weirdness. I could only wonder what other people walking through the streets thought of thousands of people walking around in Cosplay through the streets of Minneapolis well after Halloween thought. The hardest part about being there was not spending all the money we earned on every kind of Anime, Comic, or Star Wars related item.
I could have done without the very long lines for food, or the winding line to see Kevin Smith. I also experienced scalding hot water coming out of the women’s sink in the bathroom but I was happy the line wasn’t too long.
Did I miss my writing and blog? Yes! I thought about my next post and NaNoWriMo but my body needed sleep with such a big event. In fact, the end of the year will be grueling and rewarding because we packed in some of our biggest events at the end of the year.
The important thing is that I still have to desire to keep writing and continue this blog. I was worried that some of my passion for writing would diminish as more days passed but my mind always returned to what story I could tell next.
In other words, my posts may be few but they will continue into next year. Yes, this year is almost over and I’m ending on a high note. One goal I set at the beginning of the year for my handmade business has been achieved.
Next year, my plan is to double that goal and to get something published again. I wish all of you luck in your own journeys and Happy Holidays! During my downtime I’ll be parked in front of my Hallmark movies, a tradition every year. Sometimes, you just need a world full of cheesy stories and bubble of love. Take care!
