Wide Awake

The clock struck 2:00 am and my eyes opened wide. I knew the familiar feeling. I went to bed too early and my body doesn‘t like to stay asleep. Instead of tossing and turning, or trying to wake my husband up I decided to let him sleep and go do something with my time.

What else is there but having my fingers at the keyboard again. Being on summer mode has left my mind turning over stories and fingers itching. It’s strange how limiting my time has actually called me back to wanting to write some more. I guess I must be a writer after all.

The balance of doing something too much and too little is a very fine line. Too much and I need a break. Too little and I can’t get enough. I must be the Goldilocks of everything.

I find myself in the same situation with my art. Pushing myself too much leads to taking time off and switching back to my writing. If I could see the inner workings of my brain, I think I would be stumped. My brain likes to be busy but requires change after doing the same kind of task after too many days.

I don’t want to call it a creative ADHD but the fact that brain wired itself this way challenges me because I don’t want to be the Jack of All Trades and the Master of None. My goal as a writer and artist is to master these two skills. So, my new plan is to repeat a new kind of mantra that tells myself I am the master of these two passions.

Why am I sharing this at 2:00 in the morning? If you’re struggling to focus out there this weekend, then it’s time to use this weekend to zero in on our real goals. Write out what you want to accomplish, just like when I said I want to master writing and my style of art. It’s doesn’t have to be an essay. Keep the words simple even if you know the steps are going to be more involved.

The next step is picking out your catch-phrase that will trigger your brain to focus. Then, write down how you’re going to accomplish what you want. The last part is never easy, especially because the point of this prompt is to help you stay more focused. But action is always a required part to obtaining your dream. Don’t call it work, call it action.

After all my blogs, the one thing I do know is that putting your action list into practice will help you form the habits you need to get closer to what you want. It might also help you sleep better. Getting all those thoughts out on digital paper has helped my brain relax and I think I’m heading back to bed.

Until the next time I can’t sleep! My summer mode posts will continue a few times a week! Until the next post!

I’m an author in Minnesota who started out writing and illustrating Children’s books. I’ve published poetry and adult Romance Novels. I created my website and social media to reach out to other writers because the process can be lonely. I wanted to reach out to readers, writers, and those with a dream of finishing “that” novel. I share the advice of other writers and the tools I use to create my stories.
