On Location

This year as I scroll through social media and local news the day of all things greens feels quieter. I feel like I’ve only seen one week of corned beef and cabbage recipes mixed in with four leaf clover apparel. To my surprise I saw one group of friends wearing St. Patrick’s Day shirts and beads this afternoon. It was a few days early but I smiled and thought my mom. Finally, someone else had the spirit of the day in them.

I always felt like St. Patrick’s day was on of the first celebrations of spring. Maybe it’s the green color but when the 17th of March arrives I feel like warmer days are just around the corner.

Writing about a Fae Warrior Prince and a gatekeeper’s daughter, I’ve had on my meditative fairy and fantasy music this week. I’m dreaming about moss covered woodland buildings and things that you find on fantasy covers. My next few art and craft shows are going to include fantasy village pieces that I can use for prompts and background settings.

My mind and hands are busy thinking about the kinds of food that would be served at the dinner table of Fae royalty. I’m asking what kind of village would my character first see when she enters the world that’s always been on the other side of the lake? Can I fit fairy lights into a glass jar without the battery pack showing?

The fact that I can actually create a miniature village scene, like my own movie set, amazes me. Pages can come to real like and I don’t have to image. Other worldly creatures will come to life and the next challenge will be to put the reader in the same diorama.

I’ll tell myself not to describe what I see over and over again but feel and open my eyes as if I’m walking through the village in miniature scale. This brings me to your next prompt. Take action this week and bring yourself to one scene in your book. Don’t imagine. Pick out a location, a shop, a store and record. Walk through the scene with your phone and write on location for 5 – 10 minutes about what you see, hear, and smell. Try to get a real sense of what your character would see.
