Character Day

The middle of the week is here and many Minnesotans are thinking about their cabin on one of the many lakes in our State. Memorial weekend is filled with people opening their cabins out of the city back up. Campires, s’mores, and bug spray will be in full swing.

Some families will make it to the cemetery to remember their loved ones. Others will say a prayer in remembrance. Many will gather together for food, company, and catching up with each other. The woods, the city, and the stores will fill with hustle and bustle because we get one extra day off.

At least, that’s the plan. I realized that when I decided to launch new items in my store and take my online businesses a little more seriously, I have to work more often. Business owners don’t really get a day off. Remember, that when it comes to your writing. Writing a novel is the same thing. If you want it to happen, then work is required.

When you have big goals in mind, there is no life-work balance. You just need to remember to take a small pause once in a while. Then, it’s head down and back to work again. As I type this, I’m asking myself, “I’m writing daily but am I any closer to publishing that novel?”

The thought of characters frozen into place on the page should frighten me because to a writer they’re almost real. We bleed with our characters and attach emotions to them. I’ve even cried with my characters. It’s like they’re standing right next to me when they’re on the page. To a writer, they have to be that real.

How do you feel about your characters? Are you attached to them? Maybe don’t attach if they’re scary kind of character or someone who breaks the law but you get what I mean. Understanding a character is like stepping into their shoes. How else are you going to know what they’re thinking? They have their own personality that is and isn’t you.

Imagine your character in the same room with you. I’ve had you interview your characters with other prompts. Today, go deeper into who they are. Feel them and write down what they would say, or do? Write for 10-15 minutes.

My posts are Monday through Friday.

I’m an author in Minnesota who started out writing and illustrating Children’s books. I’ve published poetry and adult Romance Novels. I created my website and social media to reach out to other writers because the process can be lonely. I wanted to reach out to readers, writers, and those with a dream of finishing “that” novel. I share the advice of other writers and the tools I use to create my stories.
