Your Next Listen

The last few weeks my hands have been busy and I started to feel over saturated with visual stimulation. My brain cried out to be fed non-sensationalized headlines, click bait, and too many things to worry about.

I needed the right kind of quiet. Sometimes, I turn to audio books to fill the solitude of working from home. Maybe I wanted to retreat into the fancy of living in a book store too. I hit the play button on my downloaded library again.

If you’re feeling lost, or surrounded my chaos and don’t have good conversations to fill in your ears, then I would recommend audio books. I started to listen to Welcome To The Hyunam-Dong Bookshop, by Hwang Bo-Ruem.

At first listen and back cover reading, this book is about finding yourself when things don’t go as planned. It helps those through the question, what happens when you do everything you’re supposed to and things still don’t go as planned? You follow the path of getting a good education, get married, and get a good job but still don’t feel fulfilled? Or, things still go wrong?

It also helps that like the main character, I would love to sit and read books all day in my own book shop. The beginning of the book also asks the questions of why would someone love books so much? Like the main character, it’s because we get to live through other people in the stories. Stories that can give us advice, help us heal, and help us find our way.

The right kind of words can change our perspective on life. The right kind of words can change our lives. I guess that’s why I love writing and reading books too. We’re all searching for answers, and trying to carve out our space in this world.

Books can ground us just like the trees they are make them. Something to help us focus when we feel lost or don’t know all the answers.

How many of us set out on the same path as the characters only to find ourselves asking why we aren’t fulfilled? I know I felt the same way and had to make a change. Going to school and getting that job sometimes aren’t enough.

Where are you right now? Still in that job you hate? Not knowing what to do because life still isn’t what you expected? So many of us feel what the characters feel in this story. I still have to finish the book but I would recommend it if you’re looking for a good read.

Until next time!
