Day #28 Out For a Walk with Today’s Word – Crispy

I let out a long huff of warm air and watch as a cloud bubbles out in front of me. Walking down the empty streets it looks like Mother Nature exhaled over the lawns. There’s a small glitter over the white tipped lawns as the sun slowly rises behind me. I close my eyes and exhale again in the silence of the early morning and I listen to the crunch under my shoes. Soon, my soft soles will be replaced with thick lined books and the sound of the crispy dried leaves will be replaced with a slush and squish of white snow. My eyes open as I watch the shadow of the trees cling longer to the trees. I silently ask for a few more days of crunching, colorful leaves. Just a little longer, for a full four seasons in Minnesota.

Above is my 5-10 minute writing prompt exercise using Day #28 word – Crispy. You know what else comes to mind with that word? The foodie in me is thinking about buttery crust browning in the oven with the scent of cinnamon and apples in the air. Imagine the warmth in front of the oven during a cold winter night. What are you thinking about as you wait for the timer to buzz? Who are you thinking about?

Open your ears as you write and make use of your senses. Focusing on one sense can help you collect all the wandering thoughts in your mind and lead you in the write direction (no that wasn’t a pun). I tell myself one paragraph and one chapter at a time when I feel stuck. Especially on days when the writing is barely a drip out of my pen.

The writer in you will find a way. You just need to find your triggers to make the practice of writing normal habit. Fight the slug! NaNoWriMo is around the corner. Exercise those fingers and sharpen those pencils. Our month is about to begin!

My posts are Monday through Friday.

I’m an author in Minnesota who started out writing and illustrating Children’s books. I’ve published poetry and adult Romance Novels. I created my website and social media to reach out to other writers because the process can be lonely. I wanted to reach out to readers, writers, and those with a dream of finishing “that” novel. I share the advice of other writers and the tools I use to create my stories.
