The Way Home

Yesterday, I was driving home with the sun shining through the window and as soon as I put my visor down large, wet drops started to plop onto my car.  I thought someone turned on a sprinkler nearby but no spouts poured out of the fire hydrants.  Umbrellas popped up out of nowhere.  Temperatures reached 99 in Minneapolis.  I blinked thinking I was losing my mind.

I finally looked up to find one large, dark and heavy black cloud hovering over downtown.  My eyes went to the road and a torrential downpour started.  The windshield wipers squeaked at full speed and people ran for shelter all around me.  Clouds merged as I made my way toward the highway.  Traffic started to crawl as we all leaned forward, turned the radio down, and looked for puddles that could flood the road ahead.  I couldn’t see past the car in front of me.  My fingers flexed and I tapped the steering wheel.  I had 15 minutes to make it to the post office before the last pick-up.

My heart started to race and we stopped and started with the rhythm of the heavy rain.  My car sputtered forward with each patch of dry road.  Light, heavy, light, and then heavy.   The clock ticked and gripped the wheel harder.  My world up North went from woodlands to a tropical afternoon storm.  For a moment I felt like I was in Hawaii.

As I rounded a corner, there was my rainbow spread across the skyline.  My impatient mood shifted as I looked at the reflection on the road.  A slow smile spread across my face and my mood lifted like a different kind of storm. I let out a giggle as I drove through the end of the rainbow on my way home.

How many people can say they drove through the end of the rainbow? Only those following right behind me. I know we were all looking for our pot of gold. A sign, a promise that not all storms end in disaster. Some of them make way for a better way to end our day as we drive the road back home. So, smile through the storms and I’ll let you know when I find that pot of gold.

I’m an author in Minnesota who started out writing and illustrating Children’s books. I’ve published poetry and adult Romance Novels. I created my website and social media to reach out to other writers because the process can be lonely. I wanted to reach out to readers, writers, and those with a dream of finishing “that” novel. I share the advice of other writers and the tools I use to create my stories.
