Valentine’s Day was spent inside and cozied up over this weekend in Minnesota. Our temperatures dipped well below zero and everyone had more than one reason to stay cuddled closed and under the covers. My excitement was changing the headlights on my car with freezing fingers and running into the grocery store while my breath turned into instant ice crystals.
I know you’re all wondering, was there any romance? The answer depends on your definition of romance. Gifts were exchanged and I received a thoughtful gift from my husband – a beautiful crystal pen. My plans were more than the cards and chocolates I gave in return, it was about the little things.
Maybe it was the influence of fantasy week but I started to think about the details going into Valentine Weekend. My life is often rushed with all kinds of projects and work. It was time to slow down and take time meals at home and taking time to spend smaller moments together.
Instead of going out or ordering Uber, we picked out two days of lunch and dinner. We spent time making our food together, allowing time for our hobbies, and then we took time to watch favorite shows and Youtube together. There’s something to be said about making choices together and making a conscious effort to create quality moments.
My writer’s mind started and I think our assignment for this coming week should be about creating every day moments that bring our characters together in relationships. What are all the little things our protagonists and their love interests going to do on the pages that let the other person know they matter.
In other words, our homework as writers this week is going to be about relationship building. We are going to create memories that the characters in our stories can share. Think about the small moments. Not everything is life and death or disaster.
Follow as I post on my progress throughout the month and share the experience.
