Rose Petals On Water
The end of the week is here and I want to begin the weekend with a writing exercise. Starting out with writing prompts is a good practice to use when you feel stuck in mud at the keyboard. Choose a word, phrase, or scene filled with strong images to get my mind in the right place.
Here is a writing prompt for you to use when you don’t feel like writing or you’re not in the “mood”. Training the mind to get into the mood is part of your job as a writer. We don’t exercise all the time because we want to but because of the benefits.
Let’s continue the right habits:
Close your eyes and close off the sounds around you. Only the sound of nature is around you and you’re in a room with rice paper walls. Birds chirp outside and in front of you is rising steam from clear, clean spring water. Red rose petals are sprinkled over the surface and you breath in the air.
Write down what you see, hear, and smell. Here is mine below without any editing.
The steam lifted up over the small wooden bath, and I breathed in the fresh red petals. A smile spread over my thirsty lips and I thought of him. The ripples of his fingertips were still on the water. His touch is as soft as the rose petals. I surrounded myself in his memory as I sank down slowly into the square tub. Warm water over skin. His embrace. A breath of lavender and sharp hibiscus. He knows me like the layers of scents in the water. My body stretched under the water , unwinding like sweet water taffy. Another smile and one hand on the love note over more rose petals.
“Kissing you is like drinking warm rose water. My rose petal on water.” ~Yours
