Masterclass.com course: Dramatic Writing with David Mamet
Day 9 Lesson #9 Structuring Plot:
Every writer has their own way of structuring plot. Some of us use post-it notes that can be rearranged. Others use outlines or index cards. Plotting the journey of our main character’s story is part of our process.
To David Mamet’s point, we share the same difficulties of our character along the way to our final destination. It’s our job to find out how to get our character back onto the path when there’s a detour. We connect the points or our post-it notes until we end up at the end of the story.
We plot our shared journey to get from point A to B, and there’s a basic understanding that all paths in life don’t follow a straight line. As David points out in this lesson, it’s those difficulties that create the journey for our character.
Let’s return to our plotting together and get our characters to their final destinations. On a side note, I changed my mind about the beginning of my story. I’m returning to my original path of the road trip.
