Good Reads

The end of the week is here and I took an entire day curl up on the sofa under the soft, heated blanket that my husband gave to me at Christmas. I entered back into the world of Yeonnam-Dong’s Smiley Laundromat by Kim Jiyun and I wish it came with a scratch and sniff inside the cover.

After reading the mini chapters that come full circle to one small laundromat in the middle of a neighborhood, I want to smell the amber lavender and cotton dryer sheets with the characters in the story. A warm, lingering scent in the middle of a cold winter.

I wanted to sit down inside the yellow glow, with the sound of the washing machines in the background and write in that journal. I wanted to answer someone else who needed to hear hope, not advice. How many of us wanted to just sit and have a good cry just to release whatever we were holding inside? How many of us needed to talk someone but never did?

Imagine having a place where you could go to release any feelings that might be bringing you down, and only getting kind or concerned replies in return? That’s the feeling I had while reading this book.

More than anything, I want the year of 2025 to be the year of hope. So, I hope that all of you can find your laundromat. A place of comfort where you can confess your secrets, troubles, and pain. May the feeling of a warm blanket, fresh out of a dryer wrap around you.

I hope we all find our voices as writers again. Places like this laundromat are what I look for when I travel around to different towns all over the world. Everyone needs that one place in a trending neighborhood where the noise is drown out. Somewhere to sit, write, and be heard. Again not advice, just hope.

One book read in the new year, and one mind fed. Until my next read!
